Jane Jackson's highs and lows of a year in business in Solihull

SOLIHULL’S economy has seen a wide range of highs and lows throughout 2012.

SOLIHULL’S economy has seen a wide range of highs and lows throughout 2012. And Solihull Chamber of Commerce has experienced the same highs and lows as other local businesses. On a high note, we have had an enormously busy, challenging and successful year.

In 2012, the Chamber successfully secured the £17.5 million bid from the Regional Growth Fund to enable the A45 upgrade, which in turn of course, supports the expansion of Birmingham Airport.

Likewise we supported the World Skills UK show, to host the first ever UK Skills Show attracting literally 100,000 young people to the NEC to learn about vocational careers.

We have campaigned long and hard in favour of Birmingham Airport to ensure it receives the right recognition by Central Government and is supported to develop direct links to economies across the Far East, Americas and India.

We will be providing evidence to the Transport Select Committee on aviation issues in January 2013.

Likewise we have worked hard to support local businesses and organisations. The Chamber’s leadership and importance to our future has been most noticeably recognised by Lord Heseltine’s Growth Review.

Lord Heseltine’s desire to work with the Chamber is a direct consequence of the leadership the Chamber shows on issues important to businesses.

On the issue of transport we are currently lobbying in favour of HS2 in order to meet the ever growing demand for rail travel in the region and increase connectivity to London, the North of England and Scotland.

We will continue to work tirelessly to articulate the views of members to decision makers to ensure the best environment for business, so business input to our work is essential.

We are always keen to hear from members, so do please get in touch on 0121 781 7384.
