BBC's Newsnight recently interviewed the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Following a number of questions the inter-viewer, Emily Maitlis, was becoming somewhat frustrated with what she felt was the Archbishop's carefully worded, diplomatic answers. She challenged him, as head of the Church of England, to give a more robust lead in matters of morality and right and wrong. He responded by saying:
"Do you think that people in this country, faced with 'muscular Christianity' as you call it, are going to change their ways because I say so or anyone else says so?"
He went on to say that, if coming down heavily on certain people simply isolated them further, then from a pastoral point of view such an approach was unhelpful. ..SUPL:
