TWO nurses at Heartlands Hospital have been rewarded for their work with neonatal babies in a Midlands ceremony for health professionals.

Emma Hawkshaw and Joanne Hood, both junior sisters, received the ‘Innovations in Practice’ Award from the Southern West Midlands Newborn Network for their work with Kangaroo Care - a programme aimed at encouraging skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby for ventilated pre-term infants.

Emma said: “Kangaroo Care is a great way for mothers to have contact with their sick babies and because of the babies’ condition, mothers aren’t always able to hold them.”

Joanne added: “To be shortlisted for such an award is a great achievement and to win is even better.”

Both nurses won a trip to an international neonatal conference for their choice.
