He was only four months old when the First World War broke out and this week John Singleton from Knowle celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends.
The former draughtsman and newsagent owner was born on December 14,1914 in Green Lane – home to the notorious Peaky Blinders gang recently featured on BBC2, and John actually recalls seeing some of the members as a boy.
The great-grandfather met his first wife Gladys through their love of tennis and the pair married at St Edburgha’s Church in Yardley in 1938.
The couple had three children Kay, Tina and Digby and four granchildren.
There are now also nine great-grandchildren.
A love of cricket, tennis, bowling and long walks has kept the centenarian fit as has a simple diet of meat and two veg.
Second wife Joan died two years ago and since then John has looked after himself.
Daughter Kay Cunnigham said: “He cooks his own meals and has a carer pop in twice a day.
