THE closure of the last greengrocer’s in Solihull town centre is a bad blow, coming on top of the disappearance of every independent butcher and fishmonger.
No doubt the burden of high rents and business rates played a part in Joe Richards’s decision. The supermarkets and Marks & Spencer will be pleased - their stranglehold on the sale of fresh food is now even tighter.
The presence of the multiples has hit small traders everywhere quite hard but most towns in the region - Warwick, Tamworth and Nuneaton, for instance - still have at least some independents. Why not Solihull?
The local chamber of trade should be looking into the reasons for the decline of independent traders. Solihull, as a shopping centre, is the worse for its lack of choice.
