Local hero flies in for opening

WING-WALKER Tom Lackey paid a flying visit to Chelmsley Wood on Monday to open the town centre’s new Asda store this week.

The grand opening of the cornerstone of the town centre redevelopment prompted a celebration party featuring a performance from Britain’s Got Talent star Shaun Smith.

Shaun entertained the crowd from 9:30am with a selection of the family favourite songs that made him such a popular figure on the show.

Tom, aged 89, whose many wing-walks have raised thousands of pounds for numerous charities and good causes, was chosen to perform the grand opening after a search was launched in Solihull for a local hero.

The opening of the store marks a major milestone in a Solihull Council project to improve Chelmsley Wood town centre.

It already has new public toilets and a new bus interchange to make getting in and out much easier. Work is also nearing completion for a brand new library and Connect walk-in service, where people can go for any council-related queries.
