Major improvements are to be made to part of Solihull’s road network and public transport after the Government has ploughed more than £20 million into the borough and Greater Birmingham.

The expansion of the Government’s Growth Deal was announced at the end of last week, which will see the borough benefit from a share of £21.4 million.

The cash will finance major projects, including improvements to public transport, cycling and walking improvements on a major route which provides access to significant development sites including UK Central, Birmingham Airport and Jaguar Land-Rover’s Lode Lane plant.

The money will also be used to develop an aviation and aerospace facility at Solihull College. This will be close to Birmingham Airport and provide equipment for maintenance and repair training activities.

The borough’s Growth Deal was announced by Solihull MP Lorely Burt.

“I have long argued that Solihull is the jewel in the crown of the West Midlands economy so I am pleased this being recognised with investment in our area,” she said.

“Solihull College does a fantastic job for local people and it is wonderful to see it continue to grow.

“And anyone who drives, cycles or uses public transport will know that our roads need investment.”

Leader of Solihull Council, Bob Sleigh, added: “I am pleased that this new tranche of funding will deliver two further major projects for Solihull that will enable us to undertake a number of vital improvements to public transport, cycling and walking on Lode Lane.

“This is a major route that links significant economic assets across UK Central, including Birmingham Airport, NEC, and JLR’s Lode Lane plant and supports improvements to the Advanced Life Science facilities at Solihull College. The Growth Deal is already helping us maximise the potential local benefits from the proposed HS2 interchange station, a cornerstone in our growth plans, by allowing us to identify the priorities for future investment to support the wider opportunities.”

The investment will bring an extra 29,000 jobs, 7,000 homes and £170 million of public and private sector investment to Solihull and Greater Birmingham.

Prospective parliamentary candidate for Solihull Julian Knight added: “It is fantastic that the Conservative-led Government and our local council are working together to deliver a game changing growth deal for Solihull.

“This is already the most successful town in the West Midlands but we can’t rest on our laurels and this growth deal delivered due to sound Conservative management of the economy will ensure we go from strength to strength.”
