A DRUG addict with an ‘horrendous’ criminal record has appeared at Solihull Magistrates Court after stealing over £200 worth of stock from shops in the borough.

Martyn Shelley, of Sheppey Drive, Smith’s Wood, pleaded guilty to stealing a television worth £198 from Chelmsley Wood’s Asda on February 13 and over £10 worth of alcohol from the BP Garage, Chester Road, on April 23.

Malcolm Stoddart, prosecuting, said the 29-year-old was caught on CCTV taking the items from the stores.

“During interview the defendant told the police he could not remember what had happened, he had taken lots of drugs and alcohol. But he said if the images show that it is him, then it must have been.”

Shelley’s solicitor Sam Christopher admitted his client had an appalling record.

“This goes hand in hand with his drug addiction,” he added.

The case was adjourned for pre sentence reports.
