A CONVICTED murderer, from Chelmsley Wood, has gone on the run after absconding on an escorted visit to Stafford.

Brian Clayton, 45, is currently serving a life sentence at Featherstone Prison for a murder he committed in 1984.

On Wednesday afternoon, he absconded during a visit to Stafford town centre. He was last seen outside Boots, in Market Square, at around 3.25pm.

Clayton is described as white, pale, 5ft 9 inches tall and of average build. He has cropped brown hair, green eyes and wears glasses.

At the time of his disappearance he was wearing a dark blue Lacoste jumper, faded blue Levi jeans and black trainers. He also has numerous tattoos on his arms and hands.

Officers are urging the public not to approach Clayton if they see him, since he is potentially dangerous, but to call 999 immediately.
