AN ARSONIST has been jailed for six years for setting fire to a flat in Balsall Heath, leaving a 60-year-old man with serious injuries.

Alphonso Wickham of Thynne Street, West Bromwich, set fire to the top floor flat of a converted house in Raglan Road, Balsall Heath last year.

The 44-year-old went to the flat at 4.30pm on June 15 last year and set fire to the staircase and internal door as well as throwing accelerant over one of the occupants.

Five people had to flee the blaze, three from the top floor and two others from flats lower down.

One man, aged 60, suffered serious injuries and was on a life support machine for some time, after he jumped three storeys to escape the flames.

Two others were treated for smoke inhalation.

He pleaded guilty to arson being reckless as to whether life is endangered at an earlier hearing.

At Birmingham Crown Court, Wickham was also given an additional 12 month prison sentence for four counts of taking drugs into prison.

Detective Constable Phil Caldwell from Force CID said: “This could easily have become a murder enquiry.

“The potentially serious consequences of Wickham’s actions are reflected by the sentence handed out by the court.

“Thankfully all injured parties have made a full recovery.”
