A 22-year-old, who left a sizeable dent in a Solihull taxi after a single punch, has been fined just £135.
In the early hours of September 14, Joshua Cumberbatch of Chillinghome Road, Birmingham, had been passing Najibullah Qarluq’s Mercedes Vito cab at a borough taxi rank when he lashed out, Solihull Magistrates heard.
Malcolm Stoddard, prosecuting, said: “For reasons unknown to Mr Qarluq, the defendant was passing the taxi at around 3.30am when he punched the side, leaving a six by three inch dent.”
The driver immediately pointed Cumberbatch, who had already drunk three pints, and six shots of vodka that evening, out to the police.
Sanjit Sanghara, defending, said her client had been upset at the time. “He had just broken up with his partner, with whom he has a child. His emotions got the better of him. It was completely out of character. He has now lost his good character because of this stupid incident.”
Cumberbatch, who had no previous convictions, was also ordered to pay costs of £100.
