A Schizophrenic and drug addict has been jailed after he committed theft at a Castle Bromwich supermarket while serving a community order.

Melvyn Grayson was caught stealing £85 worth of alcohol from Tesco in Timberley Lane on June 24 and earphones worth £100 from Halfords in Birmingham on July 13.

The 26-year-old, who appeared at Solihull Magistrates Court on Monday, was also serving a community order for possessing a blade in a public place.

Baldev Atwal, prosecuting, said: “The community order was imposed on January 17 but the defendant has shown an unwillingness to comply and accept the offer of help.”

Mr Atwal said Grayson, of Brownfield Road, Shard End, tried to run off when he was caught taking the alcohol from the Tesco Express. But he was eventually detained and arrested.

“He admitted to stealing to feed his addiction. He also tested positive for drugs,” Mr Atwal added.

In his defence, it was accepted that Grayson had had ‘multiple chances’ but that he had recently been diagnosed with schizophrenia and ‘his head was all over the place.’

Magistrates were told he stole the alcohol for himself and the earphones because he owed money. He missed appointments with probation because of his mental health problems, the court heard.

Grayson pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and magistrates revoked the community order and sent him to prison for 12 weeks.
