A PARANOID schizophrenic stole toiletries because he was feeling “depressed”, a court heard.
Errol Sparkes, of Ridpool Road, Kitts Green, Birmingham, admitted stealing Lynx body spray from Wilkinsons in Chelmsley Wood on September 4 and shower gel from Tesco in Castle Bromwich on September 15 after being bullied at his supported accommodation.
Finuala Sheridan, prosecuting, said: “Police were called to attend Tesco Express on Green Lane because Mr Sparkes had been detained after he was seen on CCTV taking items from the store.
“It shows him collecting some milk and taking it to pay but, at the same time, he took two shower gels and placed them in his jacket under his armpit.
“When he went out the door he was detained by security guards.
“During his interview he said he had gone to buy some milk and had picked up the bottles of shower gel and forgotten to pay for them.”
The shower gels, worth £3.07, were recovered and on his arrest, police charged the 45-year-old with an earlier theft at Wilkinsons in Chelmsley Wood on September 4 where he was seen on CCTV stealing 15 bottles of Lynx body spray, worth £37.89.
Raj Deu, defending, said: “He is a paranoid schizophrenic, he is very troubled.
“He receives a lot of support.
“My first question to him was ‘what went wrong?’
“He said he had recently moved to new accommodation where he was bullied and was very scared.
“I spoke to the nurse at the address and she said that was correct, he had been scared and suffered depression.”
Ms Deu added that Sparkes said he had stolen the items because he was feeling depressed, but he was due to be relocated to a new home soon where he would feel settled, meaning he would no longer offend.
Sparkes was ordered to pay an £80 fine, £37.89 compensation to Wilkinsons and a £20 victim surcharge.
