St Leonard’s church in Marston Green is displaying a nativity scene of a different kind after members of the congregation spent the year knitting child-sized figures for the scene.

The woollen characters – the holy family, shepherds, three kings, a donkey and a sheep who all fit in a specially constructed stable – will be revealed at the Christmas Eve Crib Service. The nativity scene will remain in place in the church until the end of January and an open day will be held on January 6 to allow visitors to view it.

Anne Dunkley, churchwarden, said that the idea of knitted figures was inspired by seeing adult-size nativity characters in a Bristol church.
