Metal thieves risk lives in Berkswell lane

FOOLISH thieves risked life and limb when they stole 200 metres of copper power cable from a country lane in Berkswell.

FOOLISH thieves risked life and limb when they stole 200 metres of copper power cable from a country lane in Berkswell.

It’s believed the thieves scaled pylons last Friday (March 2) to cut their way through the overhead line in Spencer’s Lane.

This week, the energy company warned that those responsible were dicing with death - with thousands of volts of electricity running through cables.

Michael Clarke, from Western Power, said engineers were alerted to the theft at around 3pm and spent the best part of five hours repairing the damage.

“Because of the rural location, there was only one property that lost power - which was restored about 10 o’clock that evening,” he said.

“The main issue here is one of safety. The thieves are not only endangering their lives, but those of ordinary members of the public.”

Councillor David Bell (Con, Meriden), who lives in nearby Benton Green Lane, slammed the stupidity of those responsible. He added: “There could have been a fatality. I think tough punishments should be meted out to the folk who have done this.”
