LOUTS have run riot in Mell Square’s multi-storey car park, causing over £30,000 worth of damage.
In the latest late-night spree, thieves smashed-open payment machines and stole around £1000.
The damage has left most of the devices out-of-action and it’ll take several weeks to repair them.
On Monday, the Solihull News found many of the machines had been taped-off.
Windows and CCTV equipment were also damaged in what Solihull Council has branded “mindless vandalism”.
While repairs are underway, the local authority has been forced to place a car parking attendant on the first floor.
Drivers will have to pay the member-of-staff - who has been stationed next to the exit - before they leave.
Councillor Ted Richards, cabinet member for transport and highways, condemned the damage.
“This temporary new payment system will undoubtedly cause a great inconvenience to motorists,” he said.
“We appeal to our customers to bear with us while we do out best to fix the machines quickly.
“The manufacturers are working with us to get the machines back in service, which should be within the next few weeks.”
