Post Office Area Manager Mark Jacobs said: “We understand how important Post Office services are to the people of Shirley and we are confident that this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

He added: “This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office and marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”

Coun Howard Allen (Green, Shirley West) has welcomed the new refurbishment.

“It is very welcome and hopefully will be a better retail experience,” he said.

“The convenience of the extended opening time on a Saturday should result in shorter queues during weekdays.”

In November it announced a further £640 million investment in the Post Office network, from 2015 to 2018.
