A FREE all day car park in Shirley will close from Monday to make way for the new Parkgate development.
Concerns have been raised by residents and councillors over the potential loss of spaces during and after construction.
However bosses at Shirley Advance said shoppers would automatically ‘disperse’ into the surrounding car parks when the Haslucks Green Road car park closes.
The team has also submitted a planning application to demolish five houses on Haslucks Green Road to provide over 80 extra parking spaces during construction.
Following its completion the scheme will have its own on site parking for shoppers, as well as an underground car park.
Robert Birch of Shirley Advance said: “There is an option of imposing a three hour time limit during busy times, which I think will be beneficial for shoppers. Monitoring the current car park, we believe some people are using it as an informal park and ride to go into Birmingham.”
