TRAVELLERS at a gypsy encampment in Meriden were joined last Friday by Meriden MP Caroline Spelman and Bob Neill, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.
They also spoke to residents who are trying to prevent the travellers using Green Belt land for occupation.
Mrs Spelman said: “Both Bob and I listened to the views of both the residents and the travellers. I confirmed that I have asked for suitable sites to be found for travellers, but I am against illegal encampments and encroachment into the Green Belt.
“In Meriden I have backed the campaigns of local people who saw a field being taken over by travellers, who hoped to use a loophole in the planning laws by applying for retrospective planning permission.
“I am in favour of a balanced settlement between the travelling and settled communities.”
