A SHIRLEY woman couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw this strange creature creeping around the back garden.
Linda Greenow was cooking her Sunday dinner when she spotted the animal - believed to be a European polecat - sniffing around the bird table.
“At first I thought, is it a new breed of squirrel?” said the Union Road resident.
“It was so cute to look at and I realised it must be something a bit more exotic. It was foraging around the bird table, then when it saw me it didn’t want to hang around much longer and disappeared through an opening in the fence.”
But before it went, Linda was able to snap a few pictures with her camera and sent them in to the Solihull News.
While Linda wonders if the animal had escaped from somewhere, the polecat is in fact native to Britain - so it could be a wild animal. The species had been hunted to near extinction, but has made something of a comeback in recent years.
This particular sighting was quite unusual, because the mammals are mostly nocturnal.
