Near miss in theft drama

PETROL thieves almost ran over a policeman in Castle Bromwich, as they tried to make a speedy get-away.

PETROL thieves almost ran over a policeman in Castle Bromwich, as they tried to make a speedy get-away.

Three offenders, in a silver BMW 3-series, had filled up at the Morrisons petrol station, last Wednesday.

A PC on patrol spotted the theft, but the gang sped away - nearly knocking over the officer in the process.

However, the PC left his mark, smashing the front window and windscreen with his baton.

The incident happened on the garage forecourt, in Chester Road, at around 7.30pm.

The male driver is described as black, believed to be in his 40s, and was wearing a Deerstalker-style hat.

There was also a female front passenger and another in the rear seats.

PC Stewart Powers said that the BMW would stand-out, because of the damage to the windows.

“If any car repair garages have taken in a silver BMW with window damage then we’d like to hear from the staff,” he said.

It is thought that the car had been fitted with stolen number plates taken from a vehicle in Chelmsley Wood earlier the same day.

Anyone with information should call PC Powers on 0345 113 5000 (ext: 7922 6741).
