A NEW police walk-in centre will help reduce crime, says the borough’s top officer.

Solihull commander Chief Superintendent Sally Bourner was speaking at the opening of the new police front desk at Solihull Connect, in Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre.

Solihull commander Chief Superintendent Sally Bourner was speaking at the opening of the new police front desk at Solihull Connect, in Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre.

“Walking into a police station can be a very difficult thing,” she said.

“So we’re putting ourselves at the heart of the community. By coming to speak to us, we can build up a trust with the community, who are the local eyes and ears and work with them to help reduce crime.”

Sergeant Mark Cowl added: “There can also be a lot of stigma attached to walking into a police station, particularly in such a close knit community.

“Here we have an accessible, friendly and informal setting where people can come and talk to us.

“It’s much more modern and family-friendly than the stuffy old police station.”

Chelmsley Wood Police Station closes to the public on Monday although an intercom will be available for emergencies.
