No to day centre charge

WE ALL know that difficult times are ahead but as a carer I am appalled at the Lib Dem/Labour proposals in Solihull, to introduce a range of new flat rate charges for people who use our day centres. They are proposing to charge disabled clients up to £12 a day for transport to get there. A proposed charge not subject to financial assessment, so if you go and use the transport the council provides, which in many cases is the only way people can get to the centres, you will have to pay for it. Added to that there is a proposal to charge the same group up to £50 a day to attend. In this case subject to financial assessment but under a very complicated set of rules which even the professionals find hard to fathom out!

If these charges go ahead they will deter people from attending, leave people in their homes and put the responsibility back on the family careres who see these services as an essential way of giving them a little free time.

Difficult times ahead yes but this is not the way to balance the books
