FIFTH Gear’s Vicky Butler-Henderson is to pass on the message of tyre safety at Halfords in Shirley to the people of Solihull as part of a Europe-wide campaign.
The Fill Up With Air campaign will be moving throughout the UK this summer, including a visit to Merry Hill on July 6.
It is thought that motorists in the Midlands are some of the worst in the country, with 44 per cent found to be driving with dangerous tyres and an alarming 9 per cent driving around with a puncture.
Car drivers will be able to have a free tyre safety check and learn how to make their tyres last longer, reduce fuel consumption and ensure greater safety on the roads.
Motorists with under-inflated tyres will also be given a free fill-up.
Vicky Butler-Henderson said: “Tyres are the only contact a vehicle has with the road and it always amazes me how little care we take as a nation in terms of looking after them. We have to remember that cars are potential lethal weapons and it is our duty to ensure that we make them as safe as possible and minimise the risk of potentially lethal accidents.”
The campaign has named the UK and Ireland as among the worst nations for driving with under-inflated tyres. Out of 27 countries only Latvia, Greece, Lithuania and Estonia have a worse record.
