THE number of people claiming jobseekers allowance has increased in Meriden at treble the rate of Solihull in the last year.

Meriden constituency, which covers North Solihull, saw a rise of 0.3 per cent in the last year to 3,456 in February, 5.1 per cent of the working population.

This is more than double than in Solihull which saw an increase of just 0.1 per cent to 1,515 out of work benefit claimants, at 2.5 per cent, according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics.

Male unemployment was also significantly higher than female at 7.2 and 3.4 per cent in Meriden and Solihull respectively, compared to 3.1 and 1.6 per cent of women claiming job seekers.
