Nursery gutted in arson attack

A NURSERY in Fordbridge will have to be demolished after an arson attack last Saturday.

A NURSERY in Fordbridge will have to be demolished after an arson attack last Saturday.

The blaze is believed to have been started in sheds adjoining Wise Owls Nursery, Woodclose Road, which is on the Bennett’s Well Primary School site on August 6 at around 5.45pm.

Gina Godwin, who owns Wise Owls with business partner Sue Evans, said: “Someone’s vandalised the gardens then started the fire at the sheds, which spread to the nursery.

“We have been in the area for 23 years and we are working hard to secure new premises for September.

“The council own the building and they want to do something with the building. I want the council to re-house us.

“It is taking the facility away from children in the area.”

A Solihull council spokesperson said: “We own the building but it was leased to Wise Owls and that lease was due to end soon.

“As Bennett’s Well Primary School, which closed last year, is currently being demolished any new arrangements to the lease would have depended on future redevelopment plans of the site.

“The fire has rendered the building beyond repair and it will now be demolished.

“Plans are now being put in place to support affected families in preparation for the new term.”

But Mrs Godwin added: “It suits the council to have the site clear because they want to build houses on it.”
