North Shields 15
Old Edwards 42
BRILLIANT Old Edwardians have booked their place in the final of the RFU Junior Vase Final at Twickenham on May 14 after their fast-paced running rugby blew away their north east opponents.
The Solihull side’s semi-final victory means that they will face the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) in the final.
Old Eds player/coach John Corr said: “It’s very exciting for everyone at the club.
“HAC aren’t going to be easy and the hardest decision we have to make now is selection, it’s proving very difficult, all of the guys have played superbly but we can only field so many players.”
Edwardians, founded in 1882, have a long and illustrious history but nothing quite like the story of their 2010/11 season. And they turned in a dominant display against after making the long trip to North Shields.
The team were in superb form as the pack laid the foundations for fly half Dave Gray to show off his skills.
And it was Gray who opened the scoring, charging down a kick from his opposite number to score under the posts, adding the conversion for good measure.
The front row then won a strike against the head sending No.8 James Brough over followed soon after by skipper Michael Bourke, Gray converted both efforts.
Comfortably 3-21 ahead at half time fullback Dan Johnson scored after the home side had a player sin binned, Gray converting.
Shields then scored two tries but as the game wore on the fitness and fast paced brand of rugby Eds like to play was paying dividends.
Strong carries from the front row sucked in the Shields defence leaving winger Greg Johnson to sprint in under the posts, Gray converting.
Flanker Matt Gill had the final say, scoring with the last play of the game, Gray again converting to seal the victory and to signal the start of the celebrations.
Eds have already won the Midlands Vase and face Ledbury this Saturday in the semi finals of the North Mids Vase.
Old Eds are hoping to take as many supporters as possible with them. Coaches will leave the Old Edwardians Sports Club ground on Streetsbrook road at 7.30am prompt and are scheduled to return from the Twickenham Stadium at 7pm to arrive back at the Edwardians club at 9.30pm.
