Ten branch libraries will lose a total of 109 hours per week to save £54,000, under Solihull Council’s latest proposals.

Based on a consultation with library users from December 2011 to February 2012, hours are due to be scaled back, including closures for lunch, although there are no proposed changes to the borough’s three largest libraries: Solihull Central, Shirley and Chelmsley Wood.

One of the worst affected is Kingshurst, which will see a five hour weekly reduction in opening hours.

Kingshurst and Fordbridge councillor David Jamieson was concerned reducing hours would impact on those who relied on the service for computer access.

However, cabinet member for community services, Coun Kate Wild, said the reductions in hours had been based on current usage.

Coun Wild was due to consider the proposals yesterday (Thursday). Full report next week.
