A PANTS thief, who stole 55 packets of underwear and six pairs of socks from a Solihull store, has received a conditional discharge.
Graham Lee Farr, of Belltrees Grove, Streatham, London, stole the underwear, worth £304.39, from Store Twenty One in Chelmsley Wood, on November 24, to fuel his drug habit, Solihull Magistrates Court heard.
The 31-year-old had previously taken a money tin containing £400 from a stall holder during the Hobby Craft fayre on November 4 at the NEC.
Malcolm Stoddard, prosecuting, said police were able to track down Farr, who has 42 previous convictions for theft, after the security guard at Store Twenty One managed to wrestle the defendant’s bag off him, which contained the stolen underwear and his passport.
He added that the case had taken so long to get back to court as Farr had been in rehabilitation for his drugs addiction and had received treatment for a serious leg ulcer.
Adam Carrolan, defending, said since getting clean, Farr was determined to put his offending behind him and start afresh. “He’s now completely off the drugs, no methadone, nothing,” Mr Carrolan added. “He just wants a fresh start. He’s hoping to go back to college- he wants a job, a career. This is a man who has everything to work for. At 32, he wants to make up for lost time.”
Farr was given a conditional discharge for two years and ordered to pay £85 costs.
