POLICE have stepped up patrols in Shirley Park following reports of robberies after dark.
The neighbourhood team decided to increase its presence after people were targeted in the park itself and nearby Green Lane.
A Domehawk CCTV camera has also been installed, to reassure people walking through the area.
Officers have described the robberies as “isolated incidents” but the team is keen to prevent anyone else falling victim.
Robberies have taken place in the evenings - between 7.30-11.30pm.
On their neighbourhood website, police said they had spoken to youths who use The Bridge community centre - offering them advice on how to stay safe.
“Our advice is to always be aware of your surroundings and keep your valuables hidden at all times. Talking on a mobile phone or listening to an MP3 player shows potential thieves you have something worth taking.”
One resident who saw police in the area a few weeks ago, said he was surprised to hear of the robberies, because it was “a nice area”.
The CCTV technology set up in the park was previously used to curb criminal damage in the Nethercote Gardens area.
Officers will be reviewing the situation in Shirley Park and surrounding area next month.
If you have any information about the robberies call West Midlands Police on 0845 113 5000.
