A FUN day out was enjoyed by Solihull families when Lavender Hall Park in Balsall Common was reopened as a Nature Reserve.

Attended by TV presenter Chris Packham who cut the ribbon alongside the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor David Bell, the event included activities including bug hunts, face painting and haymaking. Conservation groups were also at the event talking about local wildlife.

The newly designated Nature Reserve, one of 16 in the borough, also has its own group, the Friends Of Lavender Hall Park, who are set to encourage residents to get involved with parks and green spaces in Solihull.

Balsall Common resident Katherine Courts was also remembered with the completion of Katherine's Wood, an area of native trees planted at Lavender Hall Park. Katherine died in March 2006.

For more information about Solihull's Local Nature Reserves and to find out how to join any of the borough's parks 'Friends Of' groups, contact Gary Farmer, Local Nature Reserve Officer on 0121 704 6537.
