Polaris out to sink teenage tearaways

BOY racers in north Solihull are being stopped in their tracks by the latest weapon in the police arsenal.

BOY racers in north Solihull are being stopped in their tracks by the latest weapon in the police arsenal.

The Chelmsley Wood neighbourhood team are using an all-terrain vehicle to out manoeuvre quad bike and moto scrambling youngsters wreaking havoc in fields and other open spaces.

Officers say the six-wheeled drive Polaris is already making a difference.

And the vehicle has been designed to be as environmentally-friendly as possible as it’s been fitted with special, soft tyres to prevent it doing damage to terrain.

PC Sam Bates, a Polaris driver, said: “A lot of the local kids have taken a keen interest in the capabilities of the Polaris and, therefore, word seems to be getting around about its presence.

“Whenever I do see a bike or quad bike the riders tend to disappear once they see the Polaris and don’t come out again that day.”

Youths driving their bikes around green spaces can damage the ground and upset other people using the area.

Anyone with information about this type of anti social behaviour can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
