Police dog hunts down thief

A THIEF, sniffed out by a persistent police dog, has been jailed.

A THIEF, sniffed out by a persistent police dog, has been jailed.

Mark Bennett, 35, from Hall Green, was arrested on May 6 after officers received calls about a man acting suspiciously in the Buryfield Road area.

The theft of an MP3 player from a car had been reported moments before and an officer’s police dog was able to follow the scent from the scene directly to the offender and suspected stolen property. The man was also found to have a sat nav and bag of clothing, taken in two earlier thefts from cars.

The man appeared at Solihull Magistrates last Tuesday (May 8) where he received a 16 week prison sentence and a further 16 weeks for a previous suspended sentence.

Chief Superintendent Sally Bourner said: “From an initial call about a man acting suspiciously we have been able to make an arrest, charge and produce him to court where he was handed a 32 week sentence, all within 24 hours. This is a great example of the results that can be achieved as we work closely with the public to ensure they are protected from the minority willing to engage in criminality.”
