DETECTIVES last night appealed for help to trace a masked, armed robber who threatened a security guard with an iron bar and escaped with a large amount of cash.
The town centre robbery happened behind Marks & Spencer's store in Mill Lane, Solihull, at about 7am on Tuesday.
The guard, working for Loomis Security, was threatened with what a CID spokeswoman described as "a crowbar type implement" and a security box, containing money was taken from him.
Police have not disclosed the amount of cash stolen but is understood to be "substantial".
The robber is described as white, about 5ft 9in tall. He wore dark clothing and had his face covered.
After grabbing the cash box, the robber and an accomplice who had been waiting nearby made off in a black Renault Megane sports hatchback. The registration begins BG 57.
Later, the cash box was opened in Beechnut Lane, off Hampton Lane, Solihull and a security device was activated and covered the money in dye.
Police appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to contact Solihull CID officers on 0121 712 6080.
The getaway car, which had impact damage and red dye on its rear, was last seen in Hampton Lane travelling at speed away from Solihull.
