A POLICEMAN has been questioned following a fatal road accident in the Meriden area in the early hours of Sunday March 8.
The 37-year-old officer, who has not been named, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He was detained at a Coventry police station and was later released on bail. West Midlands Police have confirmed that he was not on duty at the time and that the matter is now in the hands of the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
West Midlands Ambulance Service had been called to a collision on the Birmingham Road, where they found a 20-year-old student who had been hit by a car.
The pedestrian, who was from the local area, was confirmed dead at the scene.
Following the collision, the Road Policing Unit closed off the A45 to carry out their investigations. Now they’re appealing for witnesses to come forward and help them piece together what happened.
A police spokesman said: “The collision occurred in the Coventry bound section of the dual carriageway, near to the Star Oak Service Station. We are appealing for any drivers on the A45 at around that time and who may have seen anything to contact them.”
Family liaison officers are working closely with the victim’s family and he was due to be formally identified yesterday (Tuesday).
Anyone with information should call Little Park Police Station on 0845 113 5000.
