Girls from Saint Martin’s School are celebrating their success in the Go4SET EDT Competition, where they won the Best Overall Project and the Student Vote awards.
The competition is based on science, engineering and technology with an environmental theme and is an Engineering Development Trust (EDT) initiative. Teams forge links with local companies during the 10-week project and are tasked to come up with energy saving ideas for their school.
The six girls from Year 9 worked with engineering mentors from ARUP on a “Create Sport” project, where they were tasked with creating innovative and practical ideas for new or existing sports facilities. The Saint Martin’s team decided to focus on the energy required to heat the school’s swimming pool and to address how this could be improved.
The competition involved 12 teams from the Midlands region and Saint Martin’s impressed the judges with their project, they were “…stunned…” at the level of detail and hard work the girls had put into the competition. The team has been asked to take part in the British Science Association’s Big Bang regional fair at RAF Cosford in June.
