ORGANISERS were forced to cancel this year's Shirley Carnival for the first time in its 35 year history after weeks of heavy rainfall.

Saturday's event, organised by Shirley Lions, was called off after the field became too water logged for the popular attraction to go ahead.

Carnival Chairman, Lion Phil Rippington said: "Despite the continual rain we had remained optimistic that the field would hold up but the final deluges last Thursday and Friday left it unsuitable."

The Lions are hoping to reschedule the carnival, which raises money for local causes, to sometime in the autumn - depending on the weather.

Phil added: "The loss of income from the carnival will badly affect our ability to support others when an increasing number of people are in need of help. If you would like to know how you can help us please visit www.shirleylions.co.uk or email contact@shirleylions.co.uk.

"In the meantime we are looking at the option to hold the event later in the year subject to the weather, the availability of the performers booked and the progress made with the development at Parkgate."

Phil has thanked all the sponsors of the event and has advised that the Lions would like to hold on to those funds pending rescheduling.
