Reckless thieves target Hockley Heath power lines

DIM-WITTED thieves narrowly escaped death after pinching a live power cable in Hockley Heath.

DIM-WITTED thieves narrowly escaped death after pinching a live power cable in Hockley Heath.

The foolish crooks used ladders to climb pylons running live power cables on Warings Green Road sometime between midnight and 6.30am on June 2.

Cheating death, the thieves cut 120 metres of cable carrying thousands of volts of electricity, which caused a power cut to houses in the area.

Police warned would-be thieves that stealing power cables was dangerous and that other metal thefts including copper from sub-stations, has already led to the death of the thief.

PC Stuart Harris from Solihull: "A prison sentence is nothing compared to the price thieves can pay for this type of metal theft. Stealing live power cable is incredibly dangerous as they carry thousands of volts of electricity which can easily kill."

West Midlands Police are running Operation Steel across the force to tackle metal theft.

Anyone with information about the theft or who may have been offered the cable for sale is asked to call PC Stuart Harris on 0345 113 5000.
