Record attempt is a smash hit

SOLIHULL badminton players earnt themselves a place in the Guinness Book of Records this week.

SOLIHULL badminton players earnt themselves a place in the Guinness Book of Records this week.

They broke the existing record for the number of people taking part in a badminton rally at Langley School.

The previous record stood at 96 which was set last year in Singapore

There had already been two failed attempts to break the record this year at Aston University and Aylesbury, but Solihull held their nerve and went on to total 113.

It proved a nail-biting affair as the record attempt started at 1pm and failed on several occasions before Solihull triumphed at 1.40pm.

The event had been organised by Solihull and Shirley Performance Centre with help from both its juniors and senior club, together with pupils from Langley School and players from Solihull Badminton League such as Active Sports and David Lloyd.

Andrew Kitching had the privilege of hitting shot number 113, while Qiao Sun struck the all-important 97th shot to take the record.

Also taking part was Birmingham City Ladies Football Club striker Gina-Marie Goulding, who struck the 66th shot while renowned soul and jazz singer Ruby Turner was in attendance to witness the momentous occasion.
