WITH reference to AF Griffiths’ letter criticising Don Bargery, maybe it’s he (or she) who needs to remove their ‘blue-tinted specs’ to find the real reason behind the current mess this country is in.
Ask yourself who was running the country in the early 80s when the city was deregulated and the so-called ‘Big Bang’ happened, which basically meant that financial institutions were given free rein to operate how and where they wanted.
This resulted in what we see today - greed and selfishness, and gambling with our money to maximise profits for certain individualsand never mind the rest of us. It’s clear to see by any open-minded person that if the Government hadn’t intervened when it did to rescue the banks, we would be in even a bigger mess.
As to the EU - again, ask yourself who took us into the EU in 1974? Who sold off all the utility companies and other nationalised industries to make a quick profit at the expense of the rest of us?
Finally, who set up the council tax legislation following the debacle of the poll tax? Look for the answers to these questions and maybe you’ll think twice about criticising anyone who makes positive comments about the current Government.
Although not perfect by a long way, the alternative is something that worries me considerably. Finally, I’d like to say that I have no leanings toward any particular party – I don’t see any of them who could safely be left in charge of a sweet shop, let alone the country.
