A SOLIHULL councillor has been recognised as one of the brightest stars of the British Asian community.
Leela Widger, a Liberal Democrat member of the borough council, won the Future Leaders category of the prestigious Lloyds TSB Jewel Awards.
Winners of the awards - in categories including business and commerce, professional services, health care, education and public life - were chosen from thousands of nominations from the region.
Among the judges was business entrepreneur and star of Dragon’s Den, James Caan.
Ms Widger, who is a law graduate, caused something of a stir in Solihull’s political circles when at the age of 23, she won a seat in Silhill in 2007. She was the first Lib Dem to represent the ward, successfully defeating long-standing Conservative councillor Peter Hogarth (who has since been re-elected).
Ms Widger is currently Lib Dem spokeswoman for healthier communities.
“It is an honour to receive this award and I feel it also reflects the work of many residents in Silhill who have campaigned with me to make Silhill a better and safer place,” she said.
