The Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Ken Hawkins, was the guest of honour at Olton Mere Sailing Club when he officially opened new classroom facilities and launched a new boat, which are set to provide even more sailing opportunities for the local community this year.

Since becoming an RYA Training Centre 12 months ago, Olton Mere SC has experienced a boom in people – both current members and newcomers – wanting to learn to sail and do improver courses. The club has trained no fewer than six new dinghy instructors this year too.

The new classroom, completely fitted out and refurbished by the club’s members with support from Solihull Round Table, means the club can host even more people on courses.

Andrew Dixey, club commodore, said: “Becoming an RYA Training Centre has really kicked the club on; it’s a very exciting time to be involved at Olton Mere SC.”
