Santa is facing a sleigh crisis – and his visits to children in Marston Green and Chelmsley Wood may be in jeopardy this year.
Marston Green & District Lions Club have been organising the annual visits to children’s homes for the past 35 years but are struggling to get hold of a vehicle to pull Santa’s sleigh.
“The planned visits are under threat,” Pauline Hoogerwerf, press officer for Marston Green & District Lions Club, said.
“Our usual vehicle is not able to help this year.
“Unfortunately, there are not many reindeer readily available to help in Marston Green so without a vehicle to pull Santa’s sleigh, the visits will not be happening.
“It will be a great shame if this happens. We have visited thousands of children over the years.
“We now see grandparents who remember having a visit from Santa when they were younger.
“It really brings the whole of the community together. We cover a fair few streets in Marston Green and Chelmsley Wood and some of the new estates.
“We knock on the doors and all of the children come out into the street, it’s just a great atmosphere.
“It’s also a fundraiser for the Lions, so obviously it would have an impact on us too.”
The Lions need the use of a 4x4 vehicle, fitted with a tow-bar, between December 8 and 17. “It would be wonderful if someone could help us out on a few nights during this period. The Lions would pay for insurance cover and fuel,” said Pauline.
Lion President Heather Lee added: “Our Christmas sleigh has delighted thousands of children and adults alike over the last thirty-five years and it would be tragic if Santa could not make his rounds this year.”
