AS a planning application is submitted for a fourth marina along the Stratford & Grand Union Canal, protestors from Lapworth and Hockley Heath have joined forces with Knowle residents to ask local MPs to oppose the proposals.
A new Hockley Heath Marina is planned for Green Belt agricultural land in Wharf Lane with a recent planning application to Warwick District Council. There are also propsals in nearby Lowsonford and two in Knowle - Stripes Hill and Grove Farm, Jacobean Lane.
Tony Pledger from Local Residents Marina Opposition Group has sought the backing of Caroline Spelman, MP for Meriden and Warwick and Leamington MP, James Plaskitt. Mr Plaskitt said: “I was out at the site on Sunday and met a number of residents. I am amazed this is coming in and is on Green Belt land.
“I have already written to the head of planning at Warwick District Council and I am urging the council to reject this the grounds of integrity.
“I don’t see a reason for this marina and I suspect that British Waterways are putting a whole host in, in the hope of getting one accepted.”
This is a view echoed by Mrs Spelman. “I am certainly not keen to see a marina development and I am slightly concerned there’s a danger to accept one of them.”
British Waterways had not commented at the time of going to press.
