Second rate street art

A BEGGAR with a painted face, draped in a white sheet, has been moved on by Shirley Police.

A BEGGAR with a painted face, draped in a white sheet, has been moved on by Shirley Police.

The man, from Romania, had been standing on the Stratford Road - asking for donations.

But the second-rate “statue” was spotted by officers last Friday (August 5) and promptly removed.

Sergeant Paul O’Reilly said: “There are street performers who do this professionally in London.

“Unfortunately the ones we’re getting in Shirley are rather second rate, their heads follow you around.”

He said that the man had pretended not to understand English, until the possibility of arrest was mentioned.

“Begging is not something we condone and we’re certainly not happy about seeing it on the Stratford Road.”

There were similar incidents in Shirley town centre and Mell Square, Solihull in May and June this year.

It’s thought the group of sub-par street acts are from the east Birmingham area.
