Seeds planted for Britain in Bloom judges in Solihull

GREEN-fingered folk in Solihull are pinning their hopes on a bloomin’ marvellous display this week.

GREEN-fingered folk in Solihull are pinning their hopes on a bloomin’ marvellous display this week.

The pressure’s on as the town is representing the whole of the West Midlands for the national Britain in Bloom judges.

After showcasing the borough in the regional stage of the Heart of England in Bloom competition last month, it will now welcome the judges for the final showdown tomorrow.

The council enters the regional competition every year, but the town plans to come out smelling of roses by plucking the national crown.

Experts from the Royal Horticultural Society will visit to see how well the council looks after its parks, pavements and roads.

They will also be looking at how clean the streets are kept as well as casting a beady eye over its waste and recycling services.

Coun Diana Holl-Allen, cabinet member for quality of life and neighbourhoods, said: “We’re very proud of our borough.

“The fact that we’re representing the whole region in this national competition is testament to our hard work and that of residents and other local organisations, schools and businesses who help to keep our borough clean and green.”

The theme for this year’s competition is local roots, which aims to encourage people to think about local history and cultural diversity within the community.

As part of this year’s judging route, the judges will be treated to a display of Triumph motorcycles in Malvern Park.

The bikes are being provided by Meriden Triumph Owners Club. Triumph motorbikes were produced in Meriden for a short time, from 1942 after the original factory in Coventry was destroyed during World War II.

Results from both the regional and national judgings will be announced in September.
