A SERIAL thief, who attempted to simply walk out of a supermarket with a TV under his arm, has been jailed for 21 weeks.
Spencer Daffurn was seen at the Sutton Coldfield Asda store on February 25, selecting the Toshiba TV, worth £298, placing it in his trolley and covering it with a pair of trousers.
As he approached the exit, the 34-year-old, of Coleford Drive, Chelmsley Wood, then lifted out the TV and “simply walked out with it under his arm”, said Malcolm Stoddart, prosecuting.
He was stopped by security staff outside the store. Sarah McCormack, defending, said Daffurn had carried out the “very unsophisticated theft” to repay his girlfriend, who had recently paid off one of his debts.
Daffurn pleaded guilty to stealing the TV as well as the theft of a bag of £32 in coins from the BP garage in Chelmsley Wood on New Year’s Eve and taking £164 worth of alcohol from Asda, also in Chelmsley Wood, over March 18 and 19.
Ms McCormack admitted her client has been “utterly foolish” but said many of his problems stemmed back to drug use.
“There are deep-rooted issues to where Mr Daffurn feels that the only way he can deal with them is to use drugs.
“He wants to get clean from drugs.”
Daffurn was handed the custodial sentence by Solihull Magistrates.
