Service marks HQ re-opening

A SPECIAL service was held in Olton to mark the reopening of 489 Squadron Air Training Corps’ headquarters.

A SPECIAL service was held in Olton to mark the reopening of 489 Squadron Air Training Corps’ headquarters.

The Haskin’s Building in Scott Road was the location for the service, which also included the blessing of the new squadron banner.

The service was led by the padre, Father Neil Bayliss, and was attended by cadets and their families and several special guests, including members of the Solihull Royal Air Forces Association, who provided funding for the extensive refurbishment of the Haskin’s Building and the banner.

Father Neil paid tribute to Solihull RAFA and all who had helped to transform a building which he said “had been in a really bad state and was going to be torn down”.

Prior to the blessing the new banner was placed on a specially constructed drumhead altar, symbolising the kind of altar that would be created in a field of battle.
