Dolly Cresede met her future husband Bob Buchanan after he cycled down to Birmingham from Liverpool in 1934, aged just 14, in search of a better life.
The couple fell in love and planned to tie the knot in the summer of 1942 but the wedding was brought forward to April 13, as Mr Buchanan was called up to service with the Royal Artillery as a gunner.
After the war, the couple had three children; Pat, Pete and Pam at their Small Heath home before while Mr Buchanan worked at Midland Electric Manufacturing, in Tysley and his wife was a baker at Wimbushes Bakery in Coventry Road.
They now live in Crane Park Road, Sheldon and have five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The husband and wife, both 91, are currently in Heartlands Hospital as Mrs Buchanan recovers from a broken leg and her husband suffers from Alzheimer’s and suspected pneumonia.
But grandson Steve Palin, aged 46, from Solihull, said that wouldn’t stop the family celebrating.
