Shirley Carnival cancelled due to adverse weather

ORGANISERS were forced to cancel this year’s Shirley Carnival last Saturday for the first time in its 35 year history following the heavy rainfall.

Saturday’s event, organised by Shirley Lions, was called off after the field became too water logged for the popular attraction to go ahead.

Carnival Chairman, Lion Phil Rippington said: “Despite the continual rain we had remained optimistic that the field would hold up but the final deluges last Thursday and Friday left it unsuitable.”

The Lions are hoping to reschedule the carnival, which raises money for local causes, to sometime in the Autumn, depending on the weather.
